Minister of Environment reviews the achievements of Sustainable POPs Management Project in 2020

Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, reviewed the most important achievements of the project sustainable management of persistent organic pollutants under the Ministry, the project succeeded in conducting a comprehensive survey of Egyptian ports to identify any repellents of pesticides, chemicals or hazardous materials, and to ensure their safety, as this survey resulted in the collection, analysis and classification of more than 74 tons succeed to safe disposal of them
 
The minister explained that the project has prepared an integrated guide for port authorities and all entities on the proper scientific management of the storage and circulation of pesticides, chemicals and hazardous substances, including ammonia nitrate, which is used in the cement industry in order to achieve greater port safety and sustainability.
 
Fouad added that the project sustainable management of POPs succeeded in reaching the target amount of transformer oils contaminated with PCBs, which is about 1000 tons and has been examined more than 13,310 transformers, and the necessary scientific studies have been conducted by leading international expertise in this field and scientific consultants of the project to import two processing units for these oils and reuse them in order to achieve significant economic savings.
 
The Sustainable POPs Management Project in 2020 also concluded with the opening of envelopes for two announced international tenders. The first relates to the supply and installation of air pollution quality, control and measurement equipment for the Ministry of Environment in order to improve air quality and reduce air pollution in Greater Cairo, and the second relates to the repackaging and safe disposal of pesticides and residues from several sites up to about 250 tons.
